ELIGIBILITY TO UPGRADE TO STALLION REGISTRATION

Once your colt reaches 3 years of age, they can be upgraded to Foundation Adult (Stallion). This gives them:

  • Breeding rights, and

  • The right to participate in breeding assessments and other AFHA breed events.

To upgrade a Foundation Foal (Colt) registration to Foundation Adult (Stallion) registration, you must complete the Foundation Stallion Upgrade form, available through the Members Portal on the AFHA website. You will also need to submit all supporting documentation required under Section 4.2 of the Registration Guidelines.

A stallion must meet the AFHA Breed Standard & Regulations, including:

  • Approved coat colour: One of the five recognised Fjord colours.

  • Markings: No white markings permitted.

  • Hoof colour: Hooves must be dark, except for red-based horses where lighter hooves are acceptable.

  • Conformation: The horse must meet the breed’s conformation standards.

When registering a stallion with the AFHA, you will also need to submit:

  • A completed AFHA Stallion Veterinary Examination Report
(This form is available for download below)

  • A DNA sample, collected by the veterinarian at the time of the examination
(The vet must take the sample and confirm the identity of the horse during the assessment)

An applicable upgrade fee also applies.

Once your application, documentation, and payment have been verified, your stallion will receive full adult registration and will be eligible for breeding.

Stallions Already Registered with another Recognised Breed Society

If the stallion is already registered as a stallion in the studbook of a recognised Fjord breed society (here or overseas), and a veterinary examination was required for that registration:

  • You are not required to submit a new AFHA Stallion Veterinary Examination Report.

  • You can submit a DNA sample, without the vet taking it, for verification with the AFHA.

REGISTRATION PROCESS

Registering your Norwegian Fjord Horse with the Australian Fjord Horse Association (AFHA) helps maintain the integrity of the breed and ensures accurate, up-to-date records.

1. Gather Required Documents. You’ll need to upload:

    • A scan of the completed AFHA Stallion Veterinary Examination Report

    • The horse’s microchip number
    • Four clear photos showing: left side, right side, front on view and clear headshot.

2. Complete the Upgrade Form (below).

3. Pay the Registration Fee. Payment is made at the time of submission through the secure online portal.

4. Post in the original AFHA Stallion Veterinary Examination Report with the sample for DNA as taken by the veterinarian.

5. AFHA Review and Approval. Your application will be reviewed by the AFHA Registration Committee. Most registrations are processed promptly, but please allow time for verification, DNA testing and application approval.

6. Receive Your Certificate. Once approved, you’ll receive a formal registration certificate via email. This document remains with the horse for life and is required for participation in breed events, assessments, and breeding records.
