ELIGIBILITY FOR FOAL REGISTRATION

A purebred Norwegian Fjord Horse foal should be registered before 6 months of age by the breeder. If you miss the 6-month deadline, you can still register the foal up until it turns 3 years old, but a higher fee will apply.

Foals must meet the standard eligibility criteria outlined in Section 4.1 of the AFHA Horse Registration Regulations including:

  • Approved coat colour: One of the five recognised Fjord colours.

  • Markings: No white markings permitted.

  • Hoof colour: Hooves must be dark, except for red-based horses where lighter hooves are acceptable.

  • Conformation: The horse must meet the breed’s conformation standards.

Additionally, you will be required to provide the following:

  • A DNA test report verifying parentage and colour genotypes as per clause 3.3.1 of the AFHA Horse Registration Regulations,

  • A service certificate from the stallion owner,

    • OR if you used your own stallion, the breeding must be recorded in your Mare and Stallion Returns from the previous year.
    • OR a veterinary certificate of insemination (AI) or embryo transfer (ET)
    • OR a registration certificate from recognised stud book
    • OR a statutory declaration detailing why none of the above is available.

You will also be required to pay the applicable fee.

FILLY REGISTRATIONS

A filly foal registered by the breeder within the correct foal registration timeframe will receive a foal registration certificate. This certificate remains valid until the filly turns 3 years old. At that point, she must be upgraded to mare registration to:

  • Be eligible to have her offspring registered, and

  • Participate in breeding-related events coordinated by the AFHA.

COLT REGISTRATIONS

A colt foal registered by the breeder within the correct foal registration timeframe will receive a foal registration certificate. This certificate remains valid until the colt is gelded, OR turns 3 years old – at which point, he must be upgraded to Foundation Adult (Stallion) registration to:

  • Be eligible to have his offspring registered, and

  • Participate in breeding-related events coordinated by the AFHA.

If the colt is not gelded and is not upgraded to Foundation Adult (Stallion) Registration, he will keep his foal registration. He can still compete in AFHA performance events. However, his offspring will not be eligible for registration.

COLTS TO BE GELDED

If you are planning to geld your colt, or already have, then you can register as an Foundation Adult (Gelding) from any age.

Once a horse is registered as a gelding, no future offspring may be registered from that horse, even if the owner/breeder changes their mind about gelding.

If you are not 100% sure you will geld a colt foal, leave the registration as Foal (Colt). It is free, and quick, to convert to an Foundation Adult (Gelding) later if you do geld.
