STUD PREFIX APPLICATION

REGISTERING A STUD PREFIX

TITLE

Credit:

A stud prefix is a unique word or name that appears before a horse’s registered name to show where and by whom it was bred. Registering a prefix protects your stud’s identity and helps future buyers, breeders, and competitors easily recognise the horses you have produced.

Stud prefixes are an important part of the Australian Fjord Horse Association’s records and breeding history.

Why Register a Stud Prefix?

  • It clearly identifies horses bred by your stud.

  • It helps build the reputation and recognition of your breeding program.

  • It links your horses together in future performance records, breeding returns, and historical data.

  • It supports the integrity and traceability of the Fjord breed in Australia.

Rules for Stud Prefixes

To register a stud prefix with the AFHA:

  • The prefix must not already be in use by another Fjord breeder in Australia (past or present).

  • It must be clearly distinguishable from existing prefixes and not cause confusion.

  • It must only contain letters from the standard English alphabet (A–Z).

  • It must not be longer than two words, or a combination of a word and letters (e.g., “Greenfields NF”).

All prefix applications are reviewed by the Registration Committee for approval.

BYLAW 4 - Stud Prefixes

Already Registered Prefixes

Certain prefixes have already been used by Fjord breeders in Australia and are protected across all associations. These prefixes are reserved for their original owners and cannot be used by new applicants.

To view the list of protected prefixes, please read Bylaw 4 – Stud Prefixes

If You Don’t Have a Prefix

If you choose not to register a prefix, you can still register horses under a chosen name. The horse will simply be registered without a prefix.

It is highly recommended that if you plan to breed 2 or more horses, that you register a prefix with AFHA.
