HORSE REGISTRATION

ELIGIBILITY FOR AFHA REGISTRATION

To be eligible for registration with the Australian Fjord Horse Association (AFHA), a horse must meet the standards set out in our official Horse Registration Regulations.

Basic Eligibility Criteria

  • The horse must be a purebred Norwegian Fjord Horse.

  • It must trace to registered Fjord horses in recognised studbooks and meet the breed characteristics outlined in the AFHA Breed Standard.

  • The horse must be one of the five recognised Fjord colours:

    • Brown Dun

    • Red Dun

    • Grey

    • White Dun

    • Yellow Dun

  • The horse must not have white markings, with the exception of a small star (no larger than a 50-cent coin) on mares.

  • It must have dark hooves, unless red-based, where a lighter shade is permitted.

  • The horse’s conformation must be consistent with the official breed standard.

Kvit (cream) Fjords may be eligible for limited registration, but their offspring will not be eligible for registration. The AFHA does not recommend purposeful breeding of Kvit horses.

WHO CAN REGISTER A FJORD?

Only current members of the Australian Fjord Horse Association (AFHA) can register horses.

The following membership types are eligible to register horses:

  • Breeder Members
Can register foals they have bred and submit adult registrations, upgrades, and transfers.

  • Owner Members
Can register adult horses they own (including geldings), upgrade mares, and complete ownership transfers.

❗Important Notes:

  • If you are not yet a member, you’ll need to join the AFHA before lodging a registration.

  • Only the current legal owner of a horse may submit an adult registration or ownership transfer.

  • For foal registrations, the breeder listed as the owner or lessee of the mare at the time of foaling is the only person eligible to register the foal.
