There is some debate about the breed’s origins as it has a lot of visual factors in common with the Przewalski Horse and the Tarpan (now extinct). The Przewalski is the only remaining true wild horse in Central Asia and the Tarpan was the last of the wild horses in Europe.

Modern science has shown that the Przewalski cannot be the origin of Fjord Horses as it has 66 chromosomes. Both the Fjord and the Tarpan have 64 chromosomes, making the Tarpan the most likely origin of Fjord Horses. The thought is that the Tarpans migrated west from central Europe at the end of the last ice age and settled on the west coast of Norway.

Archaeological finds from the Bronze age show that horses had been domesticated in Norway at that point, which is around 1200 B.C. Further finds show that there has been deliberate breeding of horses in Norway for the past 2000 years by the Vikings. The Vikings most likely established the Fjord Horse utilising the original wild horse and other breeds brought back from pillaging and trading throughout Northern Europe.

There have always been various “types” of Fjords depending on which area of the West Coast they heralded from. The southern end had a smaller, more refined horse and the northern end favoured a larger heavier type with more hair growth. This has caused debate on whether there was more than one origin. What is clear however, is that due to the Fjords’ distinctive traits, it has been selectively bred for its suitability on the farms on the west coast and pure breeding has been maintained as a result of this to this day. The Fjord Horse is one of Norway’s National Symbols. It was a horse that could haul timber, plough fields, assist in harvesting, pack goods across mountains, pull the buggy to church and also be used in commercial transport of people, mail and goods around the country, and this versatility has been maintained and expanded on in the horse we use today.

In 1843 the Norwegian government got involved in the breeding and development of horses in Norway. They started a state-run stud that failed due to poor management and instead chose to buy stallions that could improve on the three Norwegian breeds and lease them to breeders across the country. The government appointed an agronomist to select suitable stallions for use. In his opinion there were no Fjord stallions that held up to selection, so the Fjord was to be cross bred. The resulting horses were not as suitable as the horses that were still pure bred and in 1907 it was formally decided that the Fjord Horse should only be pure bred.

Thankfully there had been stallion assessments on the west coast since 1864 and by 1875 the government and the counties on the west coast had commenced buying pure bred Fjord stallions for their leasing programs, which lasted until 1937. The most famous of these stallions were Njål 166, who can be found in the pedigree of every living fjord in the world today. The official stud book for Fjord Horses was first published in 1910 and included 308 stallions born in the years from 1857 up to 1904. Until 1989 it was an elite stud book which only included assessed and approved horses, from then on it has been supplemented with a register stud book which contains all registered Fjord Horses. Now to be eligible for registration in Norway, the horse must have 5 generations of pure bred registered fjords in their pedigree.

Njål N 166

Credit: Okänd via Häststam

Until 1941 it had been permissible to use any and all stallions for breeding. This provided Norwegian Fjord Horses owners with promotional, networking and competition opportunities and led to the formation of a subcommittee focused on Norwegian Fjord Horses. This in turn paved the way to the formation of the Australian Fjord Horse Association, a dedicated stud book to manage and guide the breeding of Norwegian Fjord Horses in Australia.

["post-392","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
